Kohl’s Launches ‘Deal Bar’ in All 1,100 Stores With Items Under $10

Quick Facts

  • Kohl’s launched ‘Deal Bar’ displays in all stores featuring seasonal and everyday items priced under $10
  • Initiative targets impulse purchases at store entrances during 15th consecutive quarter of sales deterioration
  • Analysts question whether low-price displays can meaningfully impact broader financial challenges

Kohl’s has rolled out ‘Deal Bar’ displays to all 1,100 stores nationwide, placing curated collections of merchandise priced under $10 at store entrances.

The department store launched the concept in early February with items including Super Bowl party supplies, Valentine’s Day merchandise, Easter decorations, candles, craft projects, and fitness products like jump ropes and yoga blocks. The assortment will refresh throughout the year to capture seasonal shopping opportunities.

The move comes as Kohl’s faces significant financial headwinds. Net sales decreased 7.2% in 2024 to $15.4 billion, with fourth-quarter sales falling 9.4% to $5.2 billion. The company expects revenue to drop another 5% to 7% in fiscal 2025.

The most recent quarter marked the 15th consecutive period of sales deterioration. Kohl’s business is now 22% smaller than in 2019 after losing millions of customers.

CEO Michael Bender described the turnaround as “heading toward close to the middle innings,” adding there is “still good work to be done.” Bender is the company’s third CEO in three years following the firing of Ashley Buchanan over undisclosed conflicts of interest.

Gimme Credit Senior Bond Analyst Evan Mann called the Deal Bar “a clever idea that might help spur some impulse buying” but doubts it will “move the needle in any meaningful way.” Mann cited concerns about “a strapped low- and middle-income consumer with limited discretionary income.”

The initiative aligns with Kohl’s broader strategy to optimize store layouts and drive impulse purchases. The retailer is expanding updated checkout spaces to 613 additional stores, targeting nearly all locations by the third quarter of 2025.

Evercore ISI analysts noted encouragement that improvement comes from Kohl’s “simply listening to the consumer, bringing value back” through expanded coupons and private brands.
