Prestige Fragrance Brands Struggle as 55% of US Sales Move Online

Quick Facts

  • 55% of all fragrance sales in the US now happen online, according to Nielsen
  • Only 26% of prestige fragrances were bought online last year, per Circana data
  • Global online fragrance sales grew 17.2% in 2024, three times faster than offline channels

Fragrance brands face a digital reckoning as online sales overtake physical retail for the first time. Nielsen data shows 55% of all fragrance sales in the US now happen online, while global digital fragrance sales jumped 17.2% in 2024.

The shift creates a major challenge for prestige brands. Only 26% of premium fragrances were purchased online last year, according to Circana. The gap reflects consumer reluctance to spend $300 on a scent they cannot smell versus $30 for mass-market options.

US fragrance sales reached $8.8 billion for the 52 weeks ending August 2024, up 22.1% from the previous year. Online sales specifically surged 21.6% during that period.

Jo Malone London launched an AI-powered Scent Advisor in December 2024 using Google’s technology to bridge the discovery gap. “We are entering a new era of digital scent discovery where AI can bridge the gap between curiosity and confidence,” said Jo Dancey, Global Brand President at Jo Malone London.

TikTok drives significant fragrance discovery, particularly among Gen Z males. Annual fragrance spending by teenage boys jumped 44% last year, per Piper Sandler research. Puig reported 26% of revenues came from digital channels in 2024, exceeding five-year projections.

“The creators who are successful in selling fragrances are great storytellers,” said Jack Li, TikTok Shop’s fragrance category lead.

Traditional retail faces pressure as department stores close locations. Jean Madar, CEO of Interparfums, expects 40% of his business to move online soon. “You have to adapt permanently to what’s going on in the marketplace,” Madar said.

Brands are reallocating marketing budgets accordingly. One major company increased Amazon and TikTok marketing spend by 25% this year while cutting other channels. The global fragrance e-commerce market is forecast to reach $5 billion by 2027.
