- Deal supports Aritzia’s goal to expand from 72 to 200 US stores as American sales hit 59.7% of total revenue
Canadian fashion retailer Aritzia acquired the Fred Segal brand and its original flagship store lease on Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood for an undisclosed amount. The company announced the deal Thursday.
The acquisition includes Fred Segal’s brand name, intellectual property, trademarks and the lease for the 29,000-square-foot flagship at 8100 Melrose Avenue. Aritzia will restore the location and transform it into what the company calls “an entirely new, experiential destination.”
“Fred Segal has long been a cultural touchstone in Los Angeles — a place where creativity, community and style converge,” said Jennifer Wong, CEO of Aritzia. “We are honored to steward and evolve this iconic brand for a new generation.”
The deal aligns with Aritzia’s aggressive US expansion strategy. The Vancouver-based retailer operates approximately 72 American stores and plans to reach 200 locations. US sales now account for 59.7% of Aritzia’s total revenue after growing 53.8% to $621.1 million in the third quarter.
Aritzia reported record quarterly revenue of $1.04 billion CAD ($760 million USD) in its most recent quarter, with total net revenue jumping 42.8% year over year. The company’s US customer base increased 40% over the past year.
Industry analysts view the acquisition as strategic brand building. “Aritzia is a master of brand building, storytelling, and product development,” said Neil Saunders, managing director at GlobalData. “It is betting that it can use all these skills to revive Fred Segal and make it commercially sound.”
This marks Aritzia’s second major brand acquisition. The company bought Canadian menswear brand Reigning Champ between 2021 and 2023 for approximately $63 million CAD.
Aritzia will restore the flagship’s ivy-covered facade, which sustained damage during a recent storm. The company said it is developing additional plans for the Fred Segal brand but provided no timeline for the store’s reopening.
