Vera Bradley appointed Ian Bickley as chairman and chief executive officer on Thursday, promoting him from the interim CEO role he held since June 2025. The handbag retailer’s stock surged 36% to close at $3.38 following the announcement.

Bickley brings 24 years of experience at Coach, where he served as president of the international group and helped grow the brand’s international sales from less than $20 million to more than $2 billion. At Coach, he quadrupled the Japanese subsidiary’s business between 1997 and 2006 and later served as interim CEO of The Body Shop.

The appointment comes as Vera Bradley returned to quarterly profitability for the first time in over a year. The company reported Q4 net income of $2.7 million, or $0.09 per share, compared to a $47 million loss in the prior year quarter. Operating income reached $2.7 million versus a $12.4 million loss year over year.

“Returning to profitability for the first time in over a year, combined with our third consecutive quarter of sequential improvement in the Direct channel, gives us confidence that Project Sunshine is beginning to resonate with our customers,” Bickley said.

The company simultaneously promoted Chief Financial Officer Martin Layding to chief operating and financial officer. Layding joined as CFO in June 2025 after nearly 10 years in retail finance, including roles at Tapestry and as CFO for Supreme during Carlyle’s involvement.

For fiscal 2027, Vera Bradley expects sales between $255 million and $270 million with an operating loss improvement of 40% or better. The company reported annual revenues of $269.65 million in 2025 with a $47.8 million loss, down from a $62.2 million loss the previous year.

Bickley has led Vera Bradley’s Project Sunshine transformation strategy since joining as executive chairman. The initiative aims to modernize the brand while retaining legacy styles and capturing younger customers without losing loyal older shoppers.

“We became indistinguishable from other brands and overreliant on promotions,” Bickley told analysts, explaining his focus on improving product offerings since joining the company.
