The fashion industry’s AI market will reach $4.4 billion by 2027, representing a 37% compound annual growth rate from $270 million in 2018, according to Statista. McKinsey projects the global fashion AI market will grow from $2.23 billion in 2024 to $60 billion by 2034.
A February 2024 McKinsey and Business of Fashion survey found 73% of fashion executives consider generative AI a priority for 2024. More than half already use the technology. However, only 28% have applied AI to design and product development.
Fashion executives see clear value in AI implementation. 75% prioritize AI for demand forecasting, inventory optimization, and cost control. Another 45% view AI-driven marketing as a major value driver for 2025.
“We can use AI to supercharge what we do,” said Francesca Muston, chief forecasting officer at WGSN, which counts Levi’s and Coach among clients.
The role carries significant compensation. Chief AI Officers earn average base salaries of $354,000, with top earners exceeding $500,000 at major companies where AI drives core strategy.
Zalando demonstrates AI’s business impact. The retailer implemented generative AI tools to produce editorial images aligned with real-time fashion trends. By 2024, over 70% of Zalando’s campaign visuals were AI-generated, cutting production time from weeks to days while reducing costs by 90%.

The March 2024 White House mandate requiring all federal agencies to appoint Chief AI Officers within 60 days accelerated corporate adoption. The directive responded to growing recognition that AI requires dedicated executive oversight.
“Chief AI officers must serve as internal advocates for AI while guiding teams through emerging regulations, ethical considerations, and stakeholder expectations,” industry experts note.
However, some question whether separate AI executives solve underlying challenges. “There’s a comforting fantasy: hire a chief AI officer and the problem is solved. It won’t be. The CEO must be the chief AI officer,” one analyst observed.
