Dollar General announced Tuesday that CEO Todd Vasos will step aside at year-end for grocery industry veteran JJ Fleeman Jr., who currently leads Ahold Delhaize’s U.S. operations.
Fleeman will join the 20,000-store discount chain on January 1, 2027, after spending his entire 36-year career at Ahold Delhaize. He has served as CEO of the grocery company’s U.S. operations since 2023.
The appointment comes weeks after Dollar General told shareholders it plans to grow non-grocery sales and create more of a “treasure hunt” shopping experience. The company reported strong fourth-quarter results with net income jumping 122.9% to $426.3 million.
Vasos will remain in an advisory role through April 2027. “Leading our employees, serving our customers, and supporting our communities as CEO has been the defining privilege of my career,” Vasos said in a statement.
Investors reacted negatively to the news. Dollar General stock fell 5.1% in afternoon trading on the NYSE following the announcement.
Fleeman’s compensation package includes a $1.25 million base salary, 150% target bonus opportunity, $500,000 signing bonus, and equity awards totaling about $11.5 million. Vasos will receive his $1.65 million salary through April 2027 plus a $12 million equity grant.
Board Chairman David Rowland highlighted Fleeman’s experience across “strategy, operations, marketing, merchandising and digital innovation.” At Ahold Delhaize, Fleeman previously led Peapod Digital Labs and oversaw the company’s DG Media Network retail platform, which generated $170 million in volume during 2025.
Industry experts view the hire as strategic but note challenges ahead. “Dollar General needs Fleeman to come in and revamp operations,” said supply chain consultant Brittain Ladd. Fleeman must navigate potential impacts from import tariffs and rising gas prices while maintaining Dollar General’s growth trajectory.
