- Shein opened its first permanent store in Paris’s BHV Marais department store, despite triggering protests from roughly 100 brands who exited in response
Digital fashion brand Cider opened its first permanent retail location in April 2026, joining a growing list of online-first companies moving into physical stores. The 7,800-square-foot space at Original Farmers Market in Los Angeles represents a major milestone for the brand that sells millions of garments monthly.
Cider raised $130 million in Series B funding in 2021 and has built a community of more than 7 million shoppers across 130 countries. The company plans to expand its physical presence to London, Paris, and Dubai in coming years.
“It’s a great way to meet with our communities and build that personal relationship,” said Fenco Lin, Cider’s co-founder and chief fashion officer.
Revolve Doubles Down on Physical Retail
Revolve Group opened its second permanent store at The Grove, an 8,450-square-foot, two-level location. The expansion follows the success of its Aspen, Colorado store that opened in June 2024. A December pop-up in the same Grove space drove substantial sales and proved effective for customer acquisition.
The company launches over 1,900 new styles weekly and maintained approximately 82% of net sales at full price in 2024. “Expanding our physical footprint is both a strategic and natural progression,” said Michael Mente, co-founder and co-CEO of Revolve Group.
Shein Faces Backlash in Paris Debut
Shein opened its first permanent store in Paris’s BHV Marais department store, with five additional locations planned for Galeries Lafayette stores across France. The Chinese retailer generated approximately $2.4 billion in French sales in 2024 and claims 25 million users in the country.
The Paris opening triggered significant controversy. Roughly 100 brands, including Sandro and Agnès B., exited BHV in protest over Shein’s presence and payment disputes.
Industry Shift Accelerates
Research from JLL shows digitally native brands planning physical stores now outnumber those remaining solely online. ICSC data reveals online sales rise an average of 6.9% in trade areas where retailers open physical locations.
Physical retail still accounts for about 85% of global business-to-consumer commerce. Brick-and-mortar stores help brands reduce customer acquisition costs and boost organic traffic to e-commerce sites.
“For the overwhelming majority of digital natives going into physical stores, it’s not if but when,” said Erika Schanke, JLL executive vice president of global business development for retail.
