Sam’s Club expanded its Express delivery service to more than 600 club locations nationwide. The warehouse retailer has fulfilled nearly 65,000 Express deliveries since the April 2 rollout.
The enhanced service delivers orders in an average of 55 minutes. The fastest deliveries have been completed in less than 12 minutes, according to the company.
“Members love our three hours or less Express delivery, but they told us they wanted an even faster option—so, we delivered,” said Greg Pulsifer, senior vice president of e-commerce at Sam’s Club.
The service costs $10 for Plus members and $22 for Club members. Traditional three-hour delivery costs $5 for Plus members and $17 for Club members. There is no minimum purchase requirement and prices match in-club shopping.
Popular items include water, produce, rotisserie chicken, and paper goods. Members use the service for immediate needs rather than convenience add-ons.
Sam’s Club leverages Walmart’s geospatial technology and Spark delivery platform to power the service. The technology divides geographic areas into hexagonal grids for optimized delivery zones.
The launch escalates competition with Amazon for rapid delivery services. Neil Saunders, managing director at GlobalData, said the service helps Walmart and Sam’s Club compete for all online grocery missions.
“The danger of not serving all missions is that customers defect, possibly to Amazon – which is investing heavily in grocery and quick delivery,” Saunders said.
Sam’s Club’s e-commerce sales increased 23% year-over-year in the most recent quarter. Online sales now account for about 19% of revenues, with the company targeting at least 40% over time.
The service is available to most residences within 15 miles of Sam’s Club locations. Delivery slots run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily except federal holidays.
