Etsy launched its native app within ChatGPT on May 5, creating a new channel for shoppers to discover products through conversational search across the platform’s 100 million listings.
Users can tag @Etsy directly in ChatGPT prompts to receive curated product recommendations. The system handles queries like “Help me find a Mother’s Day gift under $100 for my mom who loves gardening” by surfacing relevant listings that users can browse and click through to Etsy for purchase.
The launch represents an evolution from Etsy’s previous ChatGPT integration. The company became an early partner in ChatGPT’s Instant Checkout feature in September, but OpenAI shifted focus from checkout to product discovery after finding the initial version lacked sufficient flexibility.
“It gives shoppers a way to say what they mean, whether they have something specific in mind or just a starting point,” said Rafe Colburn, Etsy’s Chief Product and Technology Officer.
The ChatGPT integration comes as Etsy reported strong Q1 2026 financial results. Revenue reached $631.3 million, beating analyst expectations, while gross merchandise sales climbed 5.5% year-over-year to $2.5 billion. The company achieved sequential active buyer growth for the first time in two years, reaching 86.6 million trailing 12-month active buyers.
Mobile performance remained strong, with mobile app GMS accounting for 47% of total GMS and growing 11.2% year-over-year. Take rate increased 180 basis points to 25.7%, driven by Etsy Ads and marketplace changes.
The timing aligns with broader AI commerce trends. Adobe Digital Insights data shows AI traffic to US retail sites grew 393% year-over-year in Q1 2026. AI-referred traffic now converts 42% better than non-AI traffic, a significant improvement from converting 38% worse one year prior.
Etsy joins other major retailers testing ChatGPT integrations. Williams-Sonoma began piloting ads on ChatGPT in February, while Sephora and Walmart launched their own ChatGPT experiences in March.
“We’re showing up in these channels to test, iterate, and understand how to help sellers reach shoppers looking for the meaningful items they offer,” Colburn said. “We won’t figure it out by sitting on the sidelines.”
Morgan Stanley predicts nearly half of online shoppers will use AI shopping agents by 2030, accounting for approximately 25% of their spending. Current research shows 73% of consumers already use AI in their shopping journey, with 45% seeking product ideas through AI assistants.
Beyond ChatGPT, Etsy is developing additional AI capabilities including a beta conversational search experience on its own platform and AI-driven discovery features centered on curated collections.
