Canadian furniture brand Article will open its first US retail stores in San Francisco and Seattle before the end of 2026. The direct-to-consumer company announced the expansion after strong performance from its Vancouver location drove confidence in physical retail.
The San Francisco store will open in the Design District to target interior designers and trade customers. The Bellevue location will serve general consumers at the Bellevue Collection shopping center outside Seattle. Both stores will average 7,500 to 8,200 square feet and offer free interior design services.
Article’s Vancouver store exceeded expectations in 2025, generating 47% revenue growth in the local market. Orders placed at the physical location averaged 20% higher value than online purchases. The success prompted CEO Aamir Baig to view retail expansion as a natural next step.
“We see physical retail as an extension of the business we built online and are approaching expansion with discipline,” Baig said. “The West Coast has always been core to our business and represents roughly a quarter of total purchases.”
The company returned to profitability in 2024 with $507 million in US revenue after navigating post-pandemic challenges. Article laid off 216 employees in late 2022 as furniture demand normalized following the COVID boom. Staff levels dropped from 1,300 workers in 2022 to about 500 currently.
Article joins other digital-native brands expanding into physical retail as the furniture industry recovers. Wayfair recently opened brick-and-mortar locations while Ikea continues US expansion. The global furniture market reached $747.72 billion in 2024 and is projected to grow at 5.3% annually through 2033.
The US represents Article’s largest market, generating 84% of the company’s revenue in 2024. California and Washington consistently rank among the top five states for e-commerce performance. Since 2013, Article has delivered nearly three million orders to US customers.
Article plans to operate up to five stores by early 2027, including existing locations in Vancouver and Toronto. The expansion comes as the furniture sector faces headwinds from a depressed housing market and reduced discretionary spending.
