The fashion industry’s embrace of artificial intelligence for product mockups and design continues accelerating, with the AI in fashion market reaching $3.99 billion in 2026 and projected to cross $89.41 billion by 2035.
Brands are seeing dramatic efficiency gains from AI-powered workflows. Companies report reducing their concept-to-buying-meeting timeline by 60% while expanding the number of viable concepts they can evaluate per season by 300%. Traditional fashion photoshoots cost anywhere from a few thousand to over $20,000 for larger campaigns, costs that AI mockups can significantly reduce.
Etro demonstrates the business impact. The luxury brand grew its e-commerce business by 46% in the last 12 months after embracing AI in content production. CEO Fabrizio Cardinali said AI makes brands stronger while maintaining human creativity at the center.
The technology addresses a critical market need. Brands now require imagery for Shopify stores, Amazon listings, Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, email campaigns, and wholesale catalogs. Each platform demands different aspect ratios, styling conventions, and visual languages that a single photoshoot cannot accommodate.
However, adoption challenges persist. While 92% of organizations plan to increase generative AI investments, only 1% say their AI deployment has reached maturity. Consumer acceptance remains mixed, with 42% of online shoppers feeling unrepresented by model images and 59% dissatisfied when products look different than expected.
The technology also raises authenticity concerns. The fashion industry lost over €45 billion in 2020 due to counterfeit products, according to authentication platform Certilogo. The fake goods market reached €2.75 trillion in 2026, triple the 2013 amount.
Companies like The RealReal deploy AI tools Shield and Vision to combat fakes. These systems, trained on extensive product databases, have helped identify over 200,000 counterfeits since 2011. Entrupy reports 91.9% of luxury authentications in 2025 came back genuine.
McKinsey analysis suggests Gen AI could add $150-275 billion to fashion industry operating profits within 3-5 years. Nearly 74% of fashion companies adopted AI for trend forecasting and inventory management to reduce waste and optimize planning.
Japan’s Ministry of Economy projects AI will help reduce fashion waste by up to 45% by 2027 through predictive demand modeling and sustainable production planning.
