Cash App has entered the accessories market with the launch of payment wands that sold out within hours. The $25 Magic Wand represents the first product in a new line called Cash App Tags, a collection of connected payment accessories.
Block’s payment platform sold all 10,000 units on June 4. The company plans to release additional Tag designs in limited runs throughout the summer before broader availability later this year.
The NFC-enabled wand links to users’ Cash App Visa Cards and works anywhere Visa tap-to-pay is accepted. The device includes a keychain for easy carrying and wearing.
Market Strategy
The launch targets Gen Z consumers who view payments as self-expression rather than utility. Cash App data shows 1 in 5 US teens already has a Cash App Card, while the platform serves 57 million monthly active users.
‘Apple Pay and Google Pay made things more convenient, but I think where we diverge in philosophy is that those made payments invisible,’ said Thomas Templeton, hardware lead at Cash App parent Block. ‘Payments should be visible. It should be fun, social, expressive.’
The product draws inspiration from a TikTok trend where users hide tap-to-pay cards inside homemade magic wands to ‘cast spells’ at checkout terminals. Videos of these transactions accumulated millions of views.
Industry Impact
Payment companies have attempted to move beyond phone-based payments for over a decade, with previous efforts involving rings, fitness bands, and watches failing to gain traction. Cash App’s approach embraces visibility rather than invisibility.
‘The cool kids will want to have one, and the only way to get it and use it is to purchase things with Cash App,’ said Don Apgar, Director of Merchant Payments at Javelin Strategy & Research.
The launch arrives as Cash App competes with Venmo, Apple Pay, Zelle, and buy-now-pay-later platforms for Gen Z financial relationships. Templeton said future partnerships could include luxury retailers and embed payment technology directly into accessories and merchandise.
‘The number of form factors we can create is nearly limitless,’ Templeton added. ‘From clothing to jewelry, almost any item can become a way to pay.’
