JCPenney and Aéropostale Launch Shared Loyalty Program Under Catalyst Brands

Quick Facts

  • Catalyst Brands launched the J.C. Penney x Aéropostale Rewards Access program on June 22, 2026, the first loyalty program Aéropostale has ever offered.
  • Members earn $10 in CashPass for every 200 points and can redeem rewards across both brands online, in-store, and via mobile apps.
  • JCPenney reported a net loss of $113 million in Q4 and $69 million in Q1 2026, adding urgency to cross-brand retention efforts.

Catalyst Brands launched a joint loyalty program for J.C. Penney and Aéropostale on June 22, connecting two retailers that together operate more than 1,100 U.S. and Puerto Rico locations. The program, called J.C. Penney x Aéropostale Rewards Access, lets shoppers earn and spend points across both brands. It is the first loyalty program in Aéropostale’s history.

Members who sign up receive a $10 CashPass from JCPenney or $5 from Aéropostale. After that, every 200 points earns $10 in CashPass. New summer challenges offer an additional $5 CashPass each time they are completed. JCPenney credit cardholders start at a higher tier and earn points faster, with perks including free shipping and member-only seasonal deals.

Catalyst Brands EVP and Chief Customer and Marketing Officer Marisa Thalberg framed the program as a value play. “By connecting these two brands, we’ve created a single ecosystem where shoppers can maximize their dollars,” she said. “Whether you’re shopping for the latest styles at Aéropostale or grabbing great fashion and beauty favorites at JCPenney, you’ll earn rewards on the entire experience.”

The loyalty launch comes as JCPenney faces mounting financial pressure. Q4 net sales fell 8% year-over-year to $1.9 billion, and net losses surged 77% to $113 million. In Q1 2026, sales dropped another 4.3% to $1.3 billion while net losses grew 9.5% to $69 million. Cash and equivalents fell more than 67% to $88 million.

Catalyst Brands was formed on January 8, 2025, through an all-equity joint venture merging JCPenney and SPARC Group. Shareholders include Simon Property Group, Brookfield Corporation, Authentic Brands Group, and Shein. The combined entity launched with over $9 billion in revenue, 1,800 store locations, 60,000 employees, and $1 billion in liquidity. It claims to have served more than 60 million customers over the past three years.

SPARC Group brought Aéropostale, Brooks Brothers, Eddie Bauer, Lucky Brand, and Nautica into the venture. JCPenney contributed its private brands, including Stafford, Arizona, and Liz Claiborne. Aéropostale operates more than 450 U.S. and Puerto Rico locations and over 1,000 stores worldwide.

The rewards program also supports a product expansion. Aéropostale is launching a College Living collection sold through JCPenney, covering saucer chairs, storage benches, bedding, shower curtain sets, lighting, and decorative pillows. The move follows a back-to-school campaign last year when JCPenney added products from Aéropostale, Hurley, and Volcom to its assortment.

Analysts remain cautious. One noted that Catalyst Brands’ shared services model may reduce operating costs for JCPenney, but added that “swinging the group into the black is still a very tall order, especially when the sales line is not stable.”

Catalyst Brands has also faced deal complications. A $947 million sale of 119 JCPenney store locations to private equity firm Onyx Partners collapsed in December 2025 after the buyer missed its closing deadline. Copper Property CTL Pass Through Trust, the entity holding the real estate, retained $2 million of a $5 million deposit and is seeking the remaining $3 million from escrow. Onyx is contesting the claim through litigation.
