Amazon Bundles Alexa+ Into Prime, Opening AI Assistant to 200 Million U.S. Members

Quick Facts

  • Amazon is making Alexa+ free for all Prime members as it completes its U.S. rollout on September 4, 2026.
  • Non-Prime members pay $19.99 per month for Alexa+; Prime costs $14.99 per month or $139 annually.
  • Amazon says tens of millions joined during the early access period, and 97% of its 600 million shipped devices can support Alexa+.

Amazon is folding its agentic AI assistant Alexa+ into a Prime membership benefit, giving all Prime subscribers unlimited access at no additional charge. The announcement came September 4, 2026, as the company completed its full U.S. rollout after more than a year of early access testing.

The move puts paid-tier AI access in front of an estimated 201 million U.S. Prime members, according to CIRP data from the March 2026 quarter. Prime membership grew at a double-digit rate year over year in Q2 2026, Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky confirmed during a July earnings call.

“Prime members enjoy unlimited access — it’s basically a paid-tier level of access that we’re including in Prime now,” said Daniel Rausch, Amazon’s VP of Alexa and Echo, in a statement to TechCrunch.

Pricing Structure

Non-Prime members can subscribe to Alexa+ for $19.99 per month or access a limited, text-based version free at Alexa.com and the Alexa app. Because a Prime membership costs $14.99 per month, subscribing to Prime is the cheaper path to full Alexa+ access for most users.

Rausch pointed to usage caps on competing free AI tiers as a key differentiator. He said offering unlimited access without those caps is “a really big deal for Prime customers,” noting that students and others regularly switch between AI tools when they hit free-tier limits.

Device and Platform Reach

Amazon is extending Alexa+ to Fire TV devices, including current-generation Fire TV Sticks, Fire TV Cube, Amazon Ember smart TVs, and third-party sets from Hisense and Panasonic with built-in Alexa. The assistant is also available through Alexa.com and the Alexa app.

Rausch said 97% of the more than 600 million devices Amazon has ever shipped can support Alexa+. The company also unveiled four new hardware products: the Echo Dot Max at $99.99, the Echo Show 8 at $179.99, the Echo Show 11 at $219.99, and a new Echo Studio at $219.99.

Strategic Shift

Amazon is discontinuing its Rufus chatbot and replacing it with “Alexa for Shopping,” an e-commerce-focused AI agent that combines Rufus and Alexa+ capabilities. The tool draws on users’ shopping history to personalize recommendations and is designed to compete directly with AI shopping tools from OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity.

Mark N. Vena, president of SmartTech Research, called Amazon’s web expansion of Alexa a “quiet but major shift,” saying the company is acknowledging that voice-only assistants are no longer sufficient. “If users now start their AI workflow in a browser tab, Alexa has to meet them there,” Vena said.

What It Means for Operators

For retail and DTC brands, the scale of the Alexa+ rollout matters. An AI assistant tied to Amazon’s shopping ecosystem and embedded in hundreds of millions of devices creates a new layer of discovery and purchase behavior for brands selling on Amazon.

Analysts note that monetization potential could grow as Alexa+ adoption increases for use cases like adding items to Amazon shopping carts and connecting to Amazon-owned smart home products like Ring, Eero, and Blink. Alexa+ also integrates with existing Prime benefits including Amazon Photos, Prime Video, and Amazon Music, reinforcing the membership as a daily-use platform rather than a shipping perk.

The early access period drew tens of millions of users. Full availability to all Prime members sets the stage for Alexa+ to become one of the largest AI assistant deployments in the U.S. market.
