eBay eliminated 800 jobs this week, cutting 6% of its workforce despite posting record revenue growth. The layoffs affect managers, directors, data scientists, software engineers and researchers across multiple states including Oregon, Utah, Texas and California.
The job cuts represent the third round of workforce reductions in three years. eBay cut 1,000 jobs in early 2024 and 500 employees in 2023.
“We are taking steps to reinvest across our business and align our structure with our strategic priorities, which will affect certain roles across our workforce,” an eBay spokesperson said.
The layoffs come as eBay reported strong financial performance for 2025. Revenue rose 8% to $11.1 billion, gross merchandise volume increased 7% to $79.6 billion, and net income grew 6% to $2.6 billion.
CEO Jamie Iannone said the company “built significant momentum across our strategic priorities, delivering meaningful growth and reinforcing our leadership in recommerce.”
The workforce reduction follows eBay’s $1.2 billion acquisition of Depop from Etsy, announced this week. The peer-to-peer fashion platform generated $1 billion in gross merchandise sales in 2025 with 7 million active buyers, 90% under age 34.
eBay has increased AI investment while cutting staff. The company deployed AI tools internally and across buyer and seller experiences. Customer service roles are shifting to AI-powered tools and offshore centers in India and Ireland.
Fashion represents more than $10 billion in annual gross merchandise volume for eBay, with 10% year-over-year growth in the U.S. in 2025. Focus categories grew more than 16% year over year in the fourth quarter.
The Depop deal creates redundancies in marketing, growth and technology teams that management is now addressing. The transaction is expected to close in the second quarter of 2026.
eBay stock declined modestly following the layoff announcement but traded up over 6% after the Depop acquisition news.
