- Campaign features Pamela Anderson in ads contrasting AI-generated models with real people starting Thursday
American Eagle Outfitters’ intimates brand Aerie launched a campaign Thursday starring Pamela Anderson that bans AI-generated models while competitors embrace artificial intelligence for fashion marketing.
The ‘100% Aerie Real’ campaign commits to never using AI-generated people or bodies in marketing. The pledge comes as the AI-generated fashion photography market grew from $1.51 billion in 2024 to $2.01 billion in 2025.
The campaign opens with Anderson’s voice directing an AI system to generate models in a stark digital interface. Each output appears instantly but lacks humanity. A camera shutter collapses the artificial setting, cutting to a live Aerie shoot with real models.
‘As AI and digital technologies blur the lines of creativity and reality, we knew it was time for Aerie to take a clear stance on our values,’ said Jennifer Foyle, president and executive creative director.
Aerie’s anti-AI stance contrasts sharply with industry trends. H&M and Mango tested AI-generated models in campaigns since 2024. Zara and Nike expanded AI across marketing and product development. Levi’s used AI models to diversify imagery and represent more consumer types.
The campaign launches amid strong business performance. Aerie generated $684 million in Q4 2025 revenue, representing 39% of total company revenue. New customers increased 14% and brand awareness rose 12%.
Aerie expanded its target audience from ages 18-35 to consumers up to 45 in fall 2025. The brand exited Q4 with record brand awareness up 21%, reaching 57% to 58% awareness levels.
‘We went into Q4 with about 50-plus, 57% to 58% brand awareness. We came out of Q4 up 21% in brand awareness,’ Foyle said.
The company will increase advertising spend by over 50% in the first half of 2026. CFO Mike Mathias said the focus is maintaining 5% spend relative to sales for continued brand awareness and customer acquisition.
Aerie allows AI tools for media buying, analytics and performance marketing but prohibits AI-generated bodies, faces or lived experiences. External partners and creators must follow the same standards.
‘It doesn’t get more real than Pamela – she embodies real and what it means to reclaim yourself,’ said Chief Marketing Officer Stacey McCormick.
The campaign will expand with creator content in April across paid social and connected TV platforms.
