Etsy Bans All Fur Products After 58-Day Protest Campaign

Quick Facts

  • Etsy will ban all natural fur products from animals killed for pelts starting August 11, 2026, with no vintage exemptions
  • The Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade led 58 days of protests across 17 cities to pressure the company
  • Small-scale trappers and fur sellers who relied on Etsy as their primary marketplace will lose access to the platform’s 86.6 million active buyers

Etsy announced it will ban all products made from or containing natural fur from animals killed primarily for their pelts, effective August 11, 2026. The policy applies regardless of age or origin, meaning vintage fur items will also be prohibited.

The decision follows a 58-day campaign by the Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade (CAFT) that included more than 50 protests across 17 cities in the US, Mexico, UK and Belgium. Activists targeted Etsy’s Brooklyn headquarters and disrupted company presentations, including pouring fake blood at protest sites.

The new policy specifically prohibits raw pelts, finished garments and accessories made with real fur from animals such as mink, fox and rabbit. It does not include taxidermy, leather, sheepskin, wool or mohair. Current fur sellers have been notified their listings will be removed.

The ban significantly impacts small-scale operations that depend on Etsy’s marketplace. Maine Wild Harvest Co., which has made more than 1,300 sales of fur products over three years, sells coyote, beaver, raccoon and fox pelts alongside finished items like beaver hand warmers.

‘This is going to impact a lot of people,’ Joshua Dostie wrote on the Maine Fur Trappers Facebook page. ‘Most are small-scale operations that have depended on platforms like Etsy to connect with customers.’

CAFT has secured 18 campaign victories since November 2020, resulting in 43 brands going fur-free. Recent wins include Condé Nast, New York Fashion Week and Rick Owens. The organization’s tactics include direct confrontations with executives and coordinated protests at corporate offices.

Etsy’s decision follows broader industry momentum against fur. In 2025, Shein Marketplace banned fur and exotic skins, Australian Fashion Week removed wildlife-derived materials, and Poland enacted a national fur farming ban. The CFDA prohibited fur at New York Fashion Week in December 2025.

However, some markets show opposite trends. Canada’s fur institute reports surging demand and record prices, with Canadian bobcat prices rising more than 300 percent year-over-year at a recent North Bay auction.

‘There’s a growing interest in quality, long-lasting fur and seal products,’ said Doug Chiasson, executive director of the Fur Institute of Canada.
