Nike Innovation Chief Tony Bignell Exits After Less Than One Year

Quick Facts

  • Tony Bignell left Nike after less than one year as innovation chief, with Andy Caine taking over the role
  • This marks the third time Nike has changed its innovation chief in under three years
  • Nike shares have dropped 31% year-to-date and 68% from their 2021 peak amid ongoing turnaround efforts

Nike replaced innovation chief Tony Bignell with Andy Caine on April 12, as the sportswear giant continues reshuffling its leadership team during CEO Elliott Hill’s turnaround efforts.

Bignell left the company “to pursue his creative and philanthropic passions,” according to a Nike spokesperson. The 30-year Nike veteran had been elevated to chief innovation officer in June 2025, making his tenure less than one year.

Caine, a 20-year Nike veteran and former vice president and creative director of Nike Sportswear, now reports to Chief Innovation, Design and Product Officer Phil McCartney. He is responsible for guiding innovation across Nike’s portfolio of brands, sports, products and platforms.

The leadership change marks the third time Nike has switched its innovation chief in under three years, raising questions about stability within the department. BNP Paribas Equity Research senior analyst Laurent Vasilescu called the departure “a real surprise” given Bignell’s first full product assortment hasn’t reached market yet.

“All turnarounds are led by a new product innovation cycle,” Vasilescu said. “His abrupt departure would suggest to us that retailers did not respond well to the product assortment showcase designed by Tony Bignell.”

Nike faces significant financial headwinds during its turnaround. The company reported third-quarter fiscal 2026 net income fell 35% to $520 million from $794 million in the prior year period. Sales dropped 8% to $12.35 billion from $13.39 billion.

Nike shares have plunged 31% since the beginning of the year and are down 68% from their November 2021 peak of $167.31. Piper Sandler downgraded Nike from Overweight to Neutral with a $50 price target, citing concerns that Hill’s turnaround is progressing too slowly.

The innovation leadership change comes as part of broader executive reshuffling under Hill, who became CEO in October 2024. In December, Nike eliminated its chief technology officer and chief commercial officer roles while elevating four regional leaders to the leadership team.

Hill outlined a turnaround strategy focused on innovation, sport and rebuilding consumer trust. He told CNBC it will take “a while” for the company to return to profitable growth as it faces increased competition and a maturing athleisure market.
