Etsy Launches ChatGPT App After Instant Checkout Integration Ends

Quick Facts

  • Etsy launched a beta ChatGPT app on May 5, 2026, allowing users to search and compare items by tagging @Etsy
  • The move comes after Etsy’s Instant Checkout integration ended in March due to low purchase volume
  • AI traffic represents less than 1% of Etsy’s total traffic but shows higher intent and order values

Etsy launched its ChatGPT app on May 5, 2026, marking a strategic shift from direct commerce integration to discovery-focused AI tools. The marketplace company ended its ChatGPT Instant Checkout partnership in March after learning shoppers preferred to browse on Etsy’s platform before purchasing.

The beta app allows users to search and compare Etsy items directly within ChatGPT conversations by tagging @Etsy. Users can explore the platform’s catalog of over 100 million listings through conversational queries.

“I think we’re going to understand how people interact with our inventory conversationally in a much richer way through the ChatGPT app,” said Chief Product and Technology Officer Rafe Colburn.

The launch follows strong Q1 2026 earnings results. Etsy reported $631 million in revenue, beating expectations with marketplace gross merchandise sales up 6% year over year. Active buyers increased for the first time in two years to 86.6 million.

AI-driven traffic currently represents less than 1% of Etsy’s total traffic but demonstrates higher purchase intent and average order values. Orders from ChatGPT show higher values than more mature acquisition channels, according to company data.

Etsy learned from its Instant Checkout experience that ChatGPT “works well as a discovery channel” as shoppers often moved to Etsy’s platform to research products before buying. The company didn’t see large sales volume from the direct integration.

Alongside the ChatGPT app, Etsy is testing conversational search within its own platform for gift-finding. The feature acts as a personal shopper offering guided discovery through AI-powered conversations.

CEO Josh Silverman explained the strategic rationale: “For Etsy, search has always been a unique challenge because our items aren’t standardized. Conversational AI allows us to finally match the human creativity of our sellers with a search experience that feels just as personal.”

The initiative addresses Etsy’s core discovery challenge. The word “gift” remains the platform’s top search query, with millions of potential matching items creating navigation complexity for buyers.

Etsy joins companies including Angi, SeatGeek, Tubi, and Wix in building native ChatGPT apps. The company is expanding its agentic commerce presence through integrations with OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google.

Etsy stock dropped 1.4% on Tuesday following the announcement but has gained 15% year-to-date. Analysts maintain a 12-month price target of $71.72 per share.
