Abercrombie & Fitch Co. revived its 90-year partnership with Sperry to test customer appetite for footwear as part of its broader push into lifestyle categories.

The capsule collection launched April 9 online and in select stores. It includes seven apparel pieces ranging from $55 to $150, plus five exclusive footwear styles reimagining Sperry’s Authentic Original boat shoes and mules with nautical-inspired beading and charm details.

The collaboration taps into shared heritage. Sperry founder Paul Sperry secured one of his first major wholesale orders from Abercrombie in 1935, when the retailer operated as a premier outdoor outfitter. The partnership continued through the 1970s.

“When we considered the next evolution of our footwear assortment, reconnecting with Sperry felt authentic and genuine,” said Corey Robinson, chief product officer at Abercrombie & Fitch. “Our customers are increasingly looking to us for a complete wardrobe, and footwear is an important part of that.”

The timing aligns with Abercrombie’s strong financial performance. The stock trades at $103.49 with a 41.8% return over the past year. The company maintains a robust Altman Z-Score of 5.1 and trades at a P/E ratio of 9.68.

Jonathan Frankel, president of ALDO Product Services, which oversees Sperry in North America, said the collaboration “brings together two great American brands with a shared history of defining timeless style.”

The partnership fits Abercrombie’s broader collaboration strategy. Recent tie-ups include technology partnerships with Nedap RFID, kidswear distribution with Haddad Brands, and sports partnerships with the NFL and TJ Watt.

Investors will watch sell-through rates and whether management highlights the collaboration’s impact on traffic and average order value. The true performance test comes with Abercrombie’s Q1 2026 earnings on May 27.

The collaboration supports Abercrombie’s “Always Forward Plan” strategy emphasizing heritage storytelling and strategic partnerships to expand beyond apparel into lifestyle categories.
