Pinterest Signs $4 Billion AWS Deal to Power AI-Driven Visual Search

Quick Facts

  • Pinterest signed a $4 billion AWS deal through 2031, its largest infrastructure investment ever
  • The platform serves 498 million monthly active users and generated $3 billion in revenue for the first time in 2023
  • Pinterest will use AWS custom chips to power next-generation AI features and personalized visual recommendations

Pinterest signed a $4 billion cloud infrastructure deal with Amazon Web Services, the visual discovery platform’s largest investment to date. The agreement extends through 2031 and builds on a partnership that began in 2010.

The deal will leverage AWS custom Trainium and Inferentia chips to power Pinterest’s next-generation AI features, enhance personalized visual recommendations, and scale targeted advertising capabilities. Pinterest plans to use AWS Trainium to host large language models and vision-language models that power personalized visual search.

“This expanded commitment with AWS gives us the compute flexibility, hardware optionality, and infrastructure efficiency to accelerate our AI vision for the next generation of visual discovery on Pinterest,” said Matt Madrigal, Pinterest’s chief technology officer.

Pinterest serves 498 million monthly active users who use the platform to find inspiration and shop products. The company delivered $3 billion in revenue for the first time in 2023, up 9% year-over-year. Third-quarter 2024 revenue reached $898.3 million, an 18% increase from the previous year.

The platform is transitioning from traditional EC2-based environments to a Kubernetes-based architecture on Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service. Pinterest said the move will improve developer speed, operational reliability, and infrastructure efficiency.

Pinterest is expanding its use of AWS Graviton processors, which already power about one-third of its compute infrastructure. The company will run more systems supporting discovery for hundreds of millions of monthly users on Graviton.

AWS Vice President Dave Brown said Pinterest has built “some of the most advanced visual AI systems on AWS.” He noted that AWS compute and purpose-built silicon give Pinterest the price-performance to train and run AI models at massive scale.

The company faces competition from Google Lens, Meta’s Instagram shopping features, and TikTok. Pinterest has staked its future on becoming the destination for visual discovery, requiring advanced computer vision models and recommendation engines that parse billions of images in real-time.

Pinterest recently launched Pinterest Assistant, a conversational search feature that lets users refine searches through back-and-forth queries. The platform also introduced multimodal search that combines text and images for personalized results.

Both companies’ stock prices moved higher following the announcement, with Pinterest up close to 5% and Amazon adding 1.7%. Pinterest already has an existing AWS commitment of $1.3 billion remaining through April 2029.
