Quick Facts
- Shopify rebuilt its POS system with scannable QR code discounts, a persistent cart display, and autofill for new customer profiles.
- The Shop App, which has 250 million verified shoppers, now handles both product discovery and post-purchase questions like return policies in one search interface.
- Shopify is launching the Verifone Victa Mobile terminal in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, and Singapore, with more markets expected later in 2026.
Shopify announced a sweeping set of updates on June 17 aimed at connecting its online store, point-of-sale hardware, and Shop App into a single shopping system. The Spring ’26 Edition targets merchants who need consistency across digital and physical channels.
The rebuilt POS reduces friction at checkout. The cart stays visible throughout the transaction, discounts can be scanned via QR code, and new customer profiles include autofill. “It’s fewer taps and just faster performance overall,” said Helen Mou, director of product and retail at Shopify.
Mou said Shopify also wants to move the checkout experience off the counter entirely. “The best retail experiences are no longer happening at the checkout counter,” she said. “They’re happening on the floor.”
To support floor-based selling, Shopify introduced the Verifone Victa Mobile terminal, a handheld device that runs Shopify POS, accepts tap, chip, swipe, and digital wallet payments, and includes a built-in barcode scanner. It can dock and function as a countertop terminal when needed.
On the consumer side, Shopify upgraded search inside the Shop App. The feature now handles the full shopping arc, from product discovery to post-purchase questions about returns. “We’ve extended our search functionality to really encompass many more use cases,” said Jess Jacobs, VP of consumer marketing and head of growth for the Shop App.
The Shop App launched in 2020 as a package tracker. It now has 250 million verified shoppers who use both the app and Shop Pay, Shopify’s one-tap checkout product. Shopify reports that Shop Pay cuts cart abandonment by 18% and nearly doubles mobile conversion rates.
These updates sit inside a broader AI commerce push Shopify has been building since late 2025. The company’s Agentic Storefronts feature, launched in the Winter ’26 Edition on December 10, 2025, syndicates merchant product catalogs to ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, and Gemini automatically. Shopify says AI-driven traffic to its stores grew 8x year-over-year since January 2025, and orders from AI-powered searches increased 15x in the same period.
Shopify also reports that AI searches powered by its catalog data convert at twice the rate of searches using scraped product data, a direct argument for merchants to stay within the Shopify ecosystem rather than rely on third-party data aggregators.
The Verifone Victa Mobile is available now in the five launch markets. Shopify has not announced pricing for the hardware publicly. Additional market availability is expected before the end of 2026.
For merchants running hybrid retail operations, the Spring ’26 Edition represents a direct push to standardize the customer experience whether a shopper buys through an AI assistant, a mobile app, or a staffed retail floor.
