Quick Facts
- Aviator Nation’s Shop app channel accounts for 3-5% of total revenue and is the brand’s fastest-growing sales channel.
- The brand received roughly 20 orders via ChatGPT in the past 30 days, a figure its e-commerce director calls “fairly insignificant” but worth preparing for.
- AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores grew 8 times year over year in Q1 2026, with orders from AI-powered searches up nearly 13 times.
Aviator Nation, the California lifestyle apparel brand founded by Paige Mycoskie in 2006, is overhauling how it presents itself online. The reason: AI shopping tools are increasingly shaping what consumers discover and buy, and the brand wants to control how it shows up in those conversations.
Curtis Ulrich, Aviator Nation’s director of e-commerce, said the brand audited how large language models described it. The results were off-target. AI tools were pulling heavily from the brand’s Major League Baseball and music festival partnerships, missing the broader story Aviator Nation wants to tell.
“What we uncovered was that it wasn’t telling the brand’s story exactly as we felt it in our hearts and minds,” Ulrich said. “From that, we could see there’s a lot of work to be done in PR and storytelling, and making sure that we’re not getting pigeonholed.”
In response, Aviator Nation began enriching its product catalog with more detailed metafields, product information, and imagery. The work mirrors what many Shopify merchants are doing as AI tools become a primary shopping interface.
Early Numbers, Big Implications
The immediate volume from AI channels remains small. Aviator Nation logged around 20 orders through ChatGPT in the past 30 days. Ulrich called that figure “fairly insignificant” relative to total order volume.
But the brand is not waiting for volume to justify action. “We still want to be mindful of it, and we want to prepare for a future where that’s a dominant form of shopping for us as a clothing brand,” Ulrich said.
The strategic logic tracks with broader Shopify platform data. In Q1 2026, AI-driven traffic to Shopify stores grew 8 times year over year. Orders from AI-powered searches increased nearly 13 times. AI-referred shoppers convert at nearly 50% higher rates than organic search and carry 14% higher average order values.
The Shop App as a Revenue Channel
Separate from AI referrals, Shopify’s Shop app is already a meaningful channel for Aviator Nation. The app currently drives 3 to 5% of the brand’s total revenue. Ulrich identified it as the company’s fastest-growing channel.
Shopify’s head of Shop growth, Jess Jacobs, said the platform is designed to avoid becoming a retargeting echo chamber. Instead, it uses purchase history to surface brands shoppers have not bought from before. Jacobs noted that nearly 50% of purchases made inside the Shop app come from first-time buyers of that brand.
Other brands are treating Shop as a content channel. Tibi distributes vertical video through the app. Pucci has updated its Shop storefront as luxury brands pay more attention to their in-app presence.
Shopify’s Agentic Commerce Push
Shopify has been building infrastructure to capture AI-driven commerce at scale. Its Spring 2026 Edition, launched June 17, included more than 150 updates. The company co-developed the Universal Commerce Protocol with Google, backed by Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Salesforce, Stripe, Etsy, Target, and Wayfair.
Shopify merchants can now have their products discovered through ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta. In its Q2 2026 earnings announced August 5, Shopify reported AI-driven traffic and orders to its stores tripled year over year. Revenue rose 34% to $3.58 billion. GMV grew 32% to $115.57 billion. The stock jumped more than 18% after the report.
One structural shift stands out for brands. Half of all AI-referred sessions land directly on a product detail page. Shoppers have already described their needs, compared options, and narrowed their choice before clicking through. The discovery and consideration phases collapse into a single conversation.
What This Means for Brands
Aviator Nation has 19 retail locations and keeps production in-house to maintain gross margins above 70%. The brand generated $1.4 million in 24 hours during a 2020 online fire sale. Its founder Paige Mycoskie has an estimated net worth of $490 million, per Forbes.
For a brand built on physical experience and in-store storytelling, the AI shift demands a new kind of catalog discipline. Product data, imagery, and brand narrative must be detailed enough for an AI agent to accurately represent the brand in a conversation it never controls.
Ulrich’s framing is simple: the orders are small now, but the channel is not going away.
